Olympic Games Paris 2024
The Olympic Games Paris 2024 took place in the French capital from 26 July to 11 August.
With separate Speed and Boulder & Lead medal events in Paris, the number of Climbing medal events doubled from two at Tokyo 2020 to four at Paris 2024. The Games also saw a significant increase in the number of Climbing athletes, rising from 40 in Tokyo to 68 in Paris.
THE VENUE
Alongside the Olympic Aquatics Centre in Saint-Denis, the Le Bourget Climbing Venue was one of only two sports facilities built specifically for the Games, addressing the shortage of sports infrastructure in the Seine-Saint-Denis area.
The venue featured five climbing walls: one indoor wall for warming up, and four outdoor walls, three for the competition and one for the athletes to warm-up.
OLYMPIC LEGACY: GROWING THE SPORT WORLDWIDE
Following Climbing’s second appearance at the Olympic Games, a dedicated legacy initiative was launched to support the sport's long-term development worldwide.
After the Games, the holds, macros, and volumes used at Paris 2024 were distributed across all five continents, supporting World Climbing member federations, and helping grow the sport locally.
Highlights of the legacy programme include:
- Africa: South Africa has receive holds for use in continental events, coaching clinics, and workshops, with additional equipment redistributed to other African National Federations.
- Asia: Equipment provided to Jordan has supported regional and continental clinics, educational courses, and development activities for athletes, coaches, and officials.
- Europe: The Le Bourget venue's warm-up and isolation areas were converted into a public Climbing gym names Marie Paradis, honouring the first woman to summit Mont Blanc.
- Oceania: Australia received legacy equipment for competitions and sport development activities.
- Pan America: El Salvador was selected as a key beneficiary, with further legacy and support programmes planned across the region.
